Kolkata, June 7 (IANS) A lottery hawker in West Bengal committed suicide after losing all his money in an online lottery.

Abhinay Mandal, 25, hanged himself Tuesday at his house in Siuri, Birbhum district, about 235 km from here.

Mandal put all his savings into the lottery after watching a small-time Kolkata trader win Rs. 170 million ($3.7 miilion) on May 29 in the Playwin online lottery. Playwin is an online lottery run by the Sikkim government with operations in many Indian towns and cities. According to local media reports, Mandal did not even have enough money to buy food for his wife and one-year-old daughter. On realising his mistake, he decided to end his life and hung himself from the ceiling with his wife's saree.'His was a known face to all. He used to sell lottery tickets in the streets of Siuri,' said a police official.
Unhappy with his meagre earnings from the sale of lottery tickets and driven by poverty, Mandal had, of late, started investing money into online lotteries. But when he came across the news of the Kolkata trader hitting the jackpot, he put all his money at stake, including his wife's small coin savings.
