HCM CITY — Can you imagine what HCM City would be like viewed in the context of a big garden? Visit Mai’s Gallery downtown and you may find out.

Truong Thien, a Hue-based artist, in his latest exhibition Flower Leaf Branch, wants city viewers to love not only the city but also themselves.

"HCM City is a busy, hectic place. Many citizens live with the stress and strains of modern life," said Thien, whose works of the natural world offer an escape from everyday problems.

Thien is exhibiting 13 oil paintings, featuring colourful flowers, trees and grass, to highlight his message: "Love your world. Love your place. Love yourself."

"I want to distract people from their problems," Saudi Thien, who is confident of his works’ effect.

He uses light and flashy colours like red, yellow, orange and green to evoke his ideas, an unusual palette not often found in many paintings by young artists, who sometimes prefer subtle grays and creams.

"But I chose the colours because they are true images of people and life in nature," said the 27-year-old, who teaches art at the Hue College of Fine Arts.

Highlights include Hoa La (Flower-Leaf), Ngu Duoi Hoa (Sleep under the Flowers) and Ngoi Tren Hoa (Sit on the Flowers), which feature human faces and flowers.

Children will also find the dream-like paintings appealing, he says.

Thien has travelled to many places, which has given him a new perspective on the world and people.

His last two exhibits, in Bangkok and in Ha Noi, were called Viet Nam-Thailand and Empty Solid.

Thien’s exhibit runs at Mai’s Gallery, 16 Nguyen Hue Street, District 1 until June 16, from 8.30am to 10pm every day. — VNS
